Instagram have recently added a new feature which lets you save your story highlights to your profile. Meaning your favourite moments can be viewed indefinitely, without the 24-hour time constraint.

Now you can personalise your highlights even more by creating covers with the app Canva.

Canva provides templates so you can easily and quickly create your own circles that appear under your bio.

Once you have downloaded the Canva app from the App Store or Google Play, select ‘Your Story’ as shown below to begin.

Once open, select blank template, which is the first option on the list.

This will bring up a range of colours to choose from at the bottom of the screen. There is also option to choose your own colour by selecting the ‘+’ icon and entering your colour code into the box.

This keeps your highlights looking professional and on brand.

Now you can add an icon, emoji or text to your chosen background colour.

To add an icon to your cover:

  • Select the “+” button on the bottom right corner of your screen
  • Select “Graphics”
  • A range of graphics will appear which you can scroll through, or you can search for a specific icon
  • Select the icon you want to use for your cover
  • You can then choose the colour you want and change the size of the icon to fit.

If you want to add more covers to your highlights then select the same ‘+’ button at the bottom right of the screen, but this time select page.

Then you can repeat the above process, choosing different graphics or writing your own text by selecting the Text button next to Graphics, as seen above.

To do this:

  • Press “Share” in the top right corner of the screen
  • Select “Quick Look” (iPhone) or “Upload to Photos” (Android)
  • Press the export icon in the bottom left corner
  • Select “Save image”

Before you can share your covers on your Instagram profile, you need to make sure the ‘archive’ feature is switched on in settings.

Click on the three dots in the top right of your Instagram profile page and into ‘story settings’ where you can check that the ‘save to archive’ button is blue, meaning it’s switched on.

Now you need to post to your covers on your Instagram story before they can be used on your profile.

Once they have been shared on your story, select the ‘highlights’ button in the bottom right of the screen.

Once the icons appear on your profile you can edit them through Instagram to make sure you are happy by changing the cover image altogether or by just resizing icons and images.
